Lana Del Rey has long built her mythos in the hazy rearview mirror of mid-century Americana, but her seventh studio album, Chemtrails Over The Country Club, captures a deeper, more vulnerable shift inward. Stepping away from the cinematic, doom-laden grandeur of Norman Fucking Rockwell!, this record strips back the production to favor intimate folk melodies, fractured Laurel Canyon nostalgia, and quiet reflections on the suffocating weight of fame. Anchored by the sprawling, whisper-quiet opener "White Dress" and the eerie, domestic surrealism of its title track, Chemtrails trades widescreen pop tragedies for a delicate, acoustic intimacy. It stands as a haunting testament to an artist finding beauty in the breakdown of her own Americana fantasy.
American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey's seventh album Chemtrails Over the Country Club features a cover of Joni Mitchell's 1970 song 'For Free' but otherwise features lyrics that pertain to her "stunning girlfriends" and "beautiful siblings." The sound of the record is therefore more airy and sunny, expansive and less claustrophobic that previous works. This lighter sound suits her - not that previous album aren't also essential - with an emotional innocence and vulnerability shining through each song. Folky, nuanced and atmospheric, this might be one of Del Ray's best yet.
